Christmas Talks

Christmas festivities across the centuries

including seasonal songs, poetry, stories, and plenty of fun and laughter!

A  TUDOR CHRISTMAS
How different was it then to your Christmas today?  Many of the traditions we have today were not thought of 500 years ago.  Come with us from Advent, through the 12 days of Christmas, to Plough Monday, and find out what Christmas was like in the 16th century!

A VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS
Celebrate the festive season with carols and poems, riddles and quizzes!
Many of today’s celebrations were introduced in the 19th century  – but were they the same in those days?  This is your chance to find out!

A WARTIME CHRISTMAS
It is the end of 1942.  Pretty well everything was rationed by then – food, clothing, petrol, coal, and only 5 inches of water in their baths!  How did they manage a thrifty Christmas in the midst of the war?      How did they celebrate with all that rationing?!

THE AUSTEN’S REGENCY CHRISTMAS
It’s the early 1800’s and the household at Chawton Cottage are preparing for the Christmas season,  but were their traditions the same as ours?
Just how different was a Regency Christmas?

A GOLDEN TWENTIES CHRISTMAS                                                                       Join us in the mid-twenties to find out if the Great War changed the way we celebrate Christmas. Was it exuberant and fun in the ‘Roaring 1920’s’!  Find out whether we stuck to some of the old traditions or made new ones!
